The 5th Congress of the Association of Asian Constitutional Courts and Equivalent Institutions was held in Ulaanbaatar on August 18-19, 2022.
More than 30 representatives, including Presidents and Chief Justices of the Constitutional Courts of about 20 countries – members of the Association, participated in the Congress in-person and online.
During the Congress, under the general theme “Recent Developments of Constitutional Justice in Asia”, the role of the Constitutional Court in the protection of democracy, its values, fundamental human rights and freedoms, and the experience of further improvement and reform of constitutional review in the face of many challenges, the current status and future goals of some countries’ constitutional review activities were presented and discussed.
Closing the meeting, Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of Mongolia and President of the Association of Asian Constitutional Courts and Equivalent Institutions Mr. Chinbat Namjil said: “The participants of the meeting have protected the Constitution, which is the legal basis for the country’s development, while the Constitutional Court and supervisory bodies protect democracy, its values, human rights, and freedoms. I would like to also emphasize the role and involvement of the Constitutional review in overcoming today’s wide-ranging multifaceted challenges and difficulties.”
He further evaluated the activities of the Association of Asian Constitutional Courts and Equivalent Institutions with such remarks: “The activities of this Association that we established have a significant impact on the improvement of the activities of the Constitutional Courts and constitutional review institutions in this region and joint development. In this context, we are working in accordance with the principle of expressing positions and opinions on issues that have received the support of the majority of members of the AACC in any international and commonwealth organizations and associations during the presidency period.
The Ulaanbaatar Declaration was unanimously approved as the result of the 5th Congress of the Association of Asian Constitutional Courts and Equivalent Institutions.
The 5th Congress of the Association of Asian Constitutional Courts and Equivalent Institutions concluded with the slogan “Mutual trust – Mutual efforts – Mutual results”.
The Constitutional Court of Mongolia was one of the initiators who proposed to establish an organization with regular activities in Asia for cooperation between Constitutional Courts and currently is presiding over this Association, which unites the Constitutional Review Organizations of 20 countries, in 2021-2023.
